Parathyroid glands are located behind the thyroid gland and control calcium levels in the blood.
Hyperparathyroidism is a relatively condition and affects 1 – 7 adults per 1000. It is the most common cause of hypercalcemia (high calcium level in the blood). Hyperparathyroidism affects more women than men.
In general, one out of four parathyroid glands become overactive and produces too much parathyroid hormone, PTH. Sometimes, there can be multiple glands which become overactive or enlarge. High PTH, in turn, increases the level of the calcium in the blood.
