Rhinitis, simply put, means inflammation, irritation, swelling in the nose. Most of the time, it is a reactive process (allergic rhinitis) but can be due non-allergic process (chronic or vasomotor rhinitis).
Allergic rhinitis occurs due to hypersensitive reaction to allergens or irritants such as pollens, molds, dust mites, animal dander, chemicals, foods, medicines, or other triggers. Seasonal al-lergic rhinitis depends on specific pollens during each season. Perennial allergic rhinitis, on the other hand, can be noted year-round.
Non-allergic and vasomotor rhinitis are not due to an allergic reaction. Non-allergic rhinitis can be due to multiple factors, including infections, medications, hormonal changes, foods, weather, recumbent, or aging.
