Sinusitis

Sinusitis is a very common entity and affects about one in eight adults annually. In general, the sinuses become swollen and sinus drainage pathways become obstructed due to inflammation / infection caused by virus, fungus, or bacteria, or simply a reactive process. Mucous and pus to fill up the nose and sinus cavities.

Sinusitis can be categorized into acute and chronic.
In acute sinusitis, the symptoms occur for less than four weeks.
In chronic sinusitis, the symptoms last longer than 12 weeks.
One can have recurrent acute infections or chronic sinusitis.

Some of the symptoms of sinusitis include:

  • Stuffy, congested, or blocked nose
  • Pain or pressure around the upper teeth
  • Fevers
  • Colored or thickens nasal drainage
  • Pain, pressure, or fullness in the face, head, or around the eyes
  • Long lasting cold-like symptoms
  • Lingering or flare of symptoms
  • Loss of smell or decreased smell

Jason Kim, MD, offers full evaluation and treatment plans for those with sinusitis. Part of the work up may involve a nasal endoscopy where a small caliber camera is inserted into the nasal cavities, and CT scan of the sinuses.
