The thyroid is a butterfly-shaped gland located in the front of the neck at the base. It produces thyroid hormone, which controls metabolism, assists in the function of muscles and organs, and regulates temperature.
One may have functional issues such as hypothyroidism or hyperthyroidism.
Symptoms of hypothyroidism may include fatigue, constipation, slow heart rate, dry skin, depression, cold intolerance, or weight gain.
Symptoms of hyperthyroidism may include tremors, heart palpitations, anxiety, muscle weakness, brittle hair, or weight loss.
One may also have structural issues such as nodules, masses, goiter, cancer.
Thyroid nodules are particularly common in women.
Most thyroid nodules are asymptomatic and most are not malignant or cancerous. Depending on the size, appearance, or symptoms caused by the nodule, additional evaluation and treatment may be needed.
